Almost A Canine Good Citizen

So Pearl failed the CGC test… but she did relatively well! The evaluator said she was this close, but she was overall SUPER wound up and on high alert. She had trouble focusing on me when starting the test and going through the first task, and then she was good walking through the crowd until the last minute when she tried to jump on someone, and with the neutral dog she didn’t sit when she was supposed to but she didn’t bark or lunge, just tried to sniff him, so, hey, progress!

Pearl seems bummed but we are proud of her even though she didn’t pass.

It helped a lot that our evaluator liked Pearl and didn’t make us feel like failures because we didn’t pass. She said that she was obviously a great dog but just had a lot of drive and was hyper-aware of her surroundings, so developing some more tools to redirect her and help her relax would make a big difference for us. She  was one of the first people I have talked to who really seemed to “get it” as far as the things we are struggling with and what it is like to live with a dog like Pearl. But just seeing how she did on the test made me feel so good about how far we have come, even though we still have a long way to go. The evaluator asked if we had thought about doing a reactive dog class. We were told previously that Pearl was not reactive/aggressive enough to need the class, but I do think it would be helpful anyway and we may do that next.

In the meantime, we are going to keep working and are going to try again soon!

Love my girl, even if she is not a good citizen

About Pearl the Puppy

Pearl is just over 40 lbs of energy mixed with a pinch of crazy. We adopted her in March 2011 from a St. Louis rescue organization called Impact for Animals (now Pet Rescue Network). We are unsure about her age, but we are guessing she was born in Fall 2010. Her background is anybody's guess, but we are pretty sure that she has at least some sighthound in her. She's a whole lot of trouble but a whole lot of fun.

  1. Good luck next time:) It sounds like Pearl did well. A CGC test isn’t all that easy! I’d have to do a LOT of work with Frankie before I’d consider having him tested, lol.

  2. You might check out the book “Control Unleashed”. Its geared towards reactive agility dogs. Lots of little tricks in it like the “look at that game” where you click & treat your dog for looking at stuff (instead of the usual attempts at begging for focus/attention). Its kind of a reverse psycology of clicking the dog for looking at stuff, but then it ends up having opposite effect of dog looking at stuff very briefly before returning focus to you for the treat. There is also a puppy book out now that I am reading now. Might have some good prevention tips if Pearl doesn’t really have a serious problem and needs more prevention than anything. Good luck!

  3. I apologize….I’m very behind on my blog reading. But I wanted to say congrats! It’s great that you took her for the test, and that you’ve seen just how far you’ve come. That’s what it’s all about after all, so keep on trying. I’m sure you’ll nail it next time. 🙂
